Reunite

“Mother, long-lost son finally meet more than 30 years later”’

By: Michael Martine, Casey Wian, and Gonzalo Alvarado

Source: CNN

A mother in Wisconsin finally meets her long-lost son on Saturday. They have not seen each other for thirty-five years when her ex-husband took him away to Mexico.  They met at the San Diego airport and it was emotional. The mother only knows how to speak English and her thirty-seven-year-old son, David Amaya Barrick, only knows how to speak Spanish. His father took him to Mexico when he was only two years old. They were in Chicago at first. His mother, Kathy Amaya, is now sixty. David spoke to her in Spanish and he said, “I love you and I missed you a lot. I welcome you into my life.” Kathy responds with "I love you and I'm very happy to see you and I'm not going to let you go." They will be in San Diego and spending a couple of days together to catch up on life and know each other again. They will go back to Wisconsin and have Thanksgiving together. Kathy also has two other children. They are four adults and are half-siblings to David. The Two of them live with Kathy. Back in Mexico, David was arrested for illegally crossing the Mexican border. “The U.S. Border Patrol thought he and a Mexican national were smugglers because they were in the company of six Romanian nationals.” Bandits also robbed David of all his money and cell phone and only left him the clothes he was wearing. David did not have any identification at the time and he told the Border Patrol agents that he was a Mexican National but, as if the memory came out of the blue, he told them that he was a U.S citizen born in Chicago. The mother must have been devastated when her ex-husband took David away but all that waiting for thirty-five years was worth it. Now they have reunited and are happy again. The only sad part of this is that they are mother and son and do not have any mother and son memories together. Every person should have those memories that they remember as a child with their parents.

The Scarlet Letter

"Could it be true? She clutched the child so fiercely to her breast, that it sent forth a cry; she turned her eyes downward at the scarlet letter, and even touched it with her finger, to assure herself that the infant and the shame were real. Yes!—these were her realities,—all else had vanished!" Pg. 41, Nathanial Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter

The setting of this quote is in the 1650’s in Boston, Massachusetts. She was standing on the scaffold and there was an audience surrounding and staring at her. Hester was given the punishment of adultery by wearing a scarlet A on her blouse. She sewed A’s on all of her clothes. She made them luxurious and fancy. She made them artistic and much different than what the Puritans would wear during that time. The A draws attention and Hester did that on purpose. She made it all fancy and embroidered because she was not ashamed of what she had done. She walked on that scaffold with dignity and her held high but all the tables turned. Hester did not realize that her punishment would be horrible but once she stood on that scaffold she realizes the shame in what she had done. She is starting to deal with the shame she put on herself with the sinful crime she committed. She is in state of shock and thinks about her memories and tries to forget about her sins. This tells us that Hester is a strong woman with pride. She is at the lowest point of her life and realizes the shame in her sins but still manages to keep her head high. She has accepted the fact that she is going to be stuck with the A on her chest with the rest of her life and keeps her dignity throughout the novel.

Seventh Century Occupations

http://www.localhistories.org/17thcenturywomen.html

In the seventeenth century, women had a long list of jobs but being a teacher, lawyer, or doctor or having an occupation in that category was not open for women. Many women were spinning cloth for clothing. Others would make shoes or were embroidering clothes. Many would also tailor clothing and sew.. There were women who would sell products. There were washerwomen for people to bring their clothes to. Women were known for cooking and being a housewife back then and that was the common job women had back then. They were bakers or they would remain housewives and most would have servants also. Housewives were busy. Many men could not run a family or a farm without the help of a housewife. Those wives who had farmers for husbands would milk cows, feed animals and grow herbs and vegetables. The housewife had to bake the food for the family and clean the house and keep the family going. Housewives would also make candles and soap for their homes. The housewife was expected to have at least a decent amount of knowledge and some medicine to treat the family when they get ill. Many families could not afford a doctor so the housewives were better than nothing. If the housewife could not take care of the family the man would leave and find a more decent woman. Poor and middle class wives were busy but the rich were not off easy either. They had to organize and keep an eye on the servants and make sure they would not do anything out of the ordinary. If the husband was away she would run the household. Merchant’s wives usually did the accounting for them and if he was traveling or away she would keep an eye on the business. Usually when the merchant wrote his will he would leave his business to the wife and she would have to run it. Most women did not have any hard jobs. They were just time consuming.

Shotgun Mayhem

“Detroit-area man charged with murder in woman's porch death”

By: Jason Hanna and Leigh Remizowski
Source: CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/15/justice/michigan-woman-shot-charges/index.html?hpt=ju_t2

Paul Wafer, 54, who is from Detroit, was charged on Friday for second-degree murder. He accidently shot and killed nineteen-year-old Renisha McBride. She was found dead with a huge shotgun wound on her face. Wafer thought she was breaking and entering into his home. Police believe McBride was drunk and disoriented from a car crash before and Wafer shot her on his porch. He was behind a locked screen door and shot through that screen door but there was no evidence of Renisha trying to break in. He has no right to claim that he shot her to stop her. Prosecutor Kym Worthy told reporters Friday, “I am saying we do not believe he acted in lawful self-defense." No he did not. McBride did not do anything wrong. Maybe she was trying to get help from someone. Gerald Thurswell, lawyer for McBride’s family, says that he believes that all the evidence points to murder but if the jury disagrees they could go for manslaughter. "She was intoxicated. She may have been boisterous. She may have been loud. ... (But) this man had absolutely no justification to take a shotgun and blow her head off," Thurswell said. What Thurswell said was true. McBride was not doing anything wrong for her to get shot. Wafer acted in an unjust way. McBride’s family does not believe the shooting was accidental. Wafer is being held on bail for $250,000. This all seems ridiculous. A young girl who was just beginning her adult life as a woman was shot in an unjust way. That is not fair to her and her family.

Ralp Waldo Emerson

When reading certain texts, it is critical to analyze and think about what one is reading otherwise one will not understand what is going on. The book Education is one of those certain types of texts. Education is written by Ralph Waldo Emerson (speaker) who is an essayist, lecturer, and poet. Education was written in the 1820s-1830s (occasion). Although it was written in the earlier times, Emerson wanted to make sure people would understand what he is talking about in his essay so he wrote it in more modern English so people today could analyze and understand the concepts and aspects. Emerson did not merely write this essay for a group of people. He wrote this for everyone (audience). Emerson wanted everyone to realize how schools are teaching and treating their students. Emerson wants to teach everyone how students should be taught or what people should do when it comes to education. He wants to inform and reform (purpose). He mentions that teachers would sometimes hit their students. He wants the teachers to guide their students, not to be drill sergeants. Emerson is against the education system during that time (subject). He wanted students to have a better education than what they were receiving. Emerson is informative and seems to know what he is talking about in his essay. He writes it confidently and criticizes in a polite way (tone). Emerson wanted education to be preventative against all human forces and wanted education to be number one to people. Education was published after he died but Emerson still made an impact on life and education today.

Wake Me Up When People Stop Going Insane

“Man sees pregnant wife stabbed on videochat”

By: Kisa Mlela Santiago and AnneClaire Stapleton

Source: HLN

Rachel Poole is in her ninth month of pregnancy. She is thirty-one and was video chatting with her husband, Army Pvt. Justin Pele Poole who is deployed overseas. During the video chat, Rachel was stabbed in the face and the stomach brutally. Rachel recognized the assailant and screamed his name over and over to her husband. Rachel called 911 and was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition but her baby is alright. Rachel has stab wounds to the face and the body. The suspect is Corey Bernard Moss. He is nineteen-years-old. He was found by Fort Bliss Military Police and turned in. Apparently Moss was waiting in Rachel’s house for her to come home so he could attack her. Moss said that Rachel owed him money for fixing her car. Moss was charged with attempted murder and put in jail. His bond is $60,000. Justin Pele Poole went on his Facebook account and asked for help and information. He wanted to know which hospital Rachel is in and where Corey is. Justin said “I promised to give my life for this freedom not the other way around. I failed her but never again.” Justin is supposed to arrive home on Friday and it is unlikely for him to go back and finish his deployment. Seeing one’s loved one being stabbed right in front of them, even if it is on Facetime, is terrible. No one wants to see that happen, especially since the wife was pregnant and was on her last month. Corey could have waited a little longer, that money was not a huge deal.

Education

To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education? I think a true education does not mean anything about learning materials in school. One could be educated in many different aspects. One could be educated by personal experience. They would know how to handle situations while others would not. Today’s standards are that if you did not go to high school or college you are not educated. That is not the case. So many business and wealthy men have not been to high school or college and most are dropouts but are educated. How did they become what they are now then? They have the knowledge on how to get there without going to school. Tests do not determine your level of education. It tests your memory. After a student study’s day and night for a test or midterm they will forget the information the next day. They do not learn it; they memorize it only to pass the test. Schools only teach the basics; Math, English, History, and Science. Those are crucial to know though. Schools are teaching students now how to live in the real word like taking care of a family or paying taxes which is terrific but education is knowing general knowledge, not what you have learned in school. If you know general knowledge then congratulations you are educated.

“5 people, 2 dogs dead at Phoenix condo complex”

Police found five people and two dogs dead on Saturday October twenty-six in Phoenix, Arizona. They were found in a condo with gunshot wounds including the suspect. A resident reported that somebody was firing shots and officers responded to that. The caller told them that the gunman fled by foot but another person reported that shots were being fired somewhere else in the condo. Police decided to look in two apartments and in the first one they found two people dead on the patio and two others dead inside. There were also two dogs dead with them. When officers went to the second apartment they found the suspect dead who shot himself. Authorities are not releasing names and they are still trying to figure out the motive. “Resident Libni DeLeon told CNN affiliate KNXV that he heard a knock on his door in the morning before the man started shooting through his front door. DeLeon said one of the bullets went through his bathroom and into his kitchen.” DeLeon ran upstairs and saw his face a little bit. DeLeon yelled at him and the gunman shot twice upstairs, turned around, and ran. Many shootings have been happening recently and it has become a growing problem. There needs to be something to be figured out to stop all this from happening. The saying “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people” is true and those people need to find a way to control themselves. These are seven lives we will never get back along with others.

Train Tagedy

“BART train kills 2 workers near San Francisco”
By: Melissa Gray
Source: CNN
Two workers were killed by the Bay Area Transit Train this afternoon in San Francisco. The workers were inspecting the tracks and a reported dip in the tracks. One of the two workers was a BART employee and the other was a contractor. Their names were not released publicly immediately. BART General Manager Grace Crunican says that “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the two workers who’ve just been killed on the BART tracks” and she mentioned that the accident is currently under investigation. The train is usually under control with an experienced operator but during the accident it was on automatic computer control. The carts had graffiti on them and after they removed the graffiti the train was being sent back to the train yard. There were people on the train but authorities did not have a chance to speak with them. All the trains have video cameras in them so this train must have had a video camera and taped the accident. The workers have worked around trains for a long time and are experts with trains. The process was to have one employee inspect the tracks and the other to be a lookout for any oncoming trains. They were supposed to inspect the track within fifteen seconds and stay clear. Being killed by a train is terrible. If one falls on the tracks they will never know how much time they have to move away if a train was coming their way. People need to be careful and aware of their surroundings to prevent accidents like these from happening.

Blind Beat Up

“Suspect named in beating of blind man in Philadelphia”
By: Julia Lull
Source: CNN
The suspect who beat the blind man on October 2nd has been named. He is twenty-nine-year old Mustafa Guyton. He is accused of assault after he kicked and stomped a thirty-three-year old man in Philadelphia. The beating was caught on a surveillance camera and the Police say that they released the video in order to figure out who the attacker was. The victim was walking down the street and was not being a burden. The video depicts Guyton putting his backpack down and then pushes the blind man to the ground and continuously punched, stomped, and kicked him. One bystander walks next to the beating, stopped for a second to look and walks away. As soon as Guyton was finished beating his victim up, he picks up his backpack and walks away. The victim is left on the floor with injuries to his head and face. The victim told authorities that he could not recognize Guyton’s voice. Police Officer Tanya Little says that nobody is sure whether Guyton knew the victim was blind or not. That does not matter. The victim could have not been blind; Guyton would still have attacked him. The bystanders did not help at all. They were all staring at the victim being beat up. How come nobody helped at all and why did Guyton decide to beat up a random person? None of it makes sense.

Hilary Clinton, Women's Rights are Human Rights

Astghik and Katya did a wonderful job on their project. Learning about what Hilary Clinton has done in her life makes me want to change my views on her. She has traveled to many countries all for woman’s rights are astonishing. Hilary Clinton listed many grievances and knowing about those grievances is heart breaking. The fact that women are tortured and neglected is terrible. One of the grievances mentions how babies are not fed or taken care of because they are born girls. That is ridiculous. Babies are innocent and have done nothing wrong. Why do they deserve all that? Women are sold for prostitution. That is degrading to women all over the world. These grievances are terrible and Clinton makes a huge point to not only men, but everyone. Clinton talks about how women are caretakers of children and how their work is not valued which is sad. Women brought children into the world and without women there would be no life. Clinton wants precautions to be taken against this issue. She wants to resolve all the problems that women are facing. Men should realize that putting women down is not right. Do they not think about their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, or whoever is a woman in their family? I am sure they would not like it if someone treated the women in their families like this. There is a famous quote by Tupac and he said “A woman brought you into this world, so you have no right to disrespect one” and that is how one gets respect. Even if a woman has no children, that does not mean they do not get disrespected. All women should be treated as equal as men. Although Astghik and Katya did a wonderful on their project, I feel as though Astghik could have been more prepared like Katya and I think Katya could have had more eye contact with the class. Overall it was a pleasant presentation.

Couple were lucky for more than thirty then recently their secrets are revealed.

“Senior couple charged in decades old cold cases”

By: Leslie Bentz

Source: CNN

Alice and Gerald Uden have been charged with murder they have committed over thirty years ago. They killed their ex-spouses in different situations. They are both now in their seventy’s. Alice and Gerald Uden have raised two children in Missouri. They go to church regularly and keep to themselves. Their neighbors had suspicions about the Udens before the secret came out. Allen Bishop told CNN affiliate KSPR "They were good people; we've known them for about 12 years now. They're the kind of neighbors you leaned over the fence and talked about your chickens with.” They seemed like an ordinary family. The couple is in jail and is waiting to be transferred to Wyoming, where the murders took place. Alice Uden killed her husband in late 1974 or early 1975 when he was only twenty-five years old. She was arrested on Thursday. A witness said that Alice told them that she had shot her husband in the back of his head while he was sleeping. Gerald is charged with killing his ex-wife’s two children. One was ten and the other was twelve. They were all killed in 1980. Gerald was charged on Friday. Gerald told officers that he shot his wife and her two kids with a .22-caliber rifle. The gun belonged to the ex-wife. Many people are finding it hard to believe what they did. A Bishop told KSPR "I was in disbelief. They are old people. They don't do things like that.” What he said is not relevant to the murders. They were not old more thirty years ago. They were actually in their twenty’s. Although there is a huge love for senior citizens in me, that does not excuse one of killing.

The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776 by Thomas Jefferson. America is now in the year 2013 and is drastically different than 237 years ago. In the document, Jefferson states eighteen complaints about King George III. In the second complaint, he states “He has forbidden his Governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend them.” This means that King George III did not let the Governors pass important laws that were needed at that time. He needed to sign them but he did not and let the country suffer. This has changed in modern times because the President of the United States wants what is good for America and wants the people to like him. He does what is important and needed to help America be a better place. In the seventeenth complaint, Jefferson states “He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.” This means that he has managed to have people, within their own colonies, fight each other. He wants to rule like the Native Americans who lived with war and destroyed anyone under any circumstances. It is very different today because people are trying to have World Peace and abolish war. All King George III ever wanted was war, war, and more war. That does not happen in present day America. It is curious to one how America is different now and how life was a couple hundred years back.

When will this all stop?

“Proud mom, model student among 4 found killed in Tennessee”
“Man, girlfriend indicted in Tennessee quadruple slaying”
By Greg Botelho and Mariano Castillo
Source: CNN

A twenty-six-year old man and his girlfriend were charged on Friday for killing four young people in a car after a drug deal in Tennessee. Jacob Allen Bennett and his girlfriend Lina Yvonn Moser who is twenty five have both been charged and this is the first time Moser has been in any criminal trouble. What was supposed to be a drug deal, turned into a robbery, which led to the killing of four people. Among the four people killed, Dominic Davis was one. He was seventeen and moved to Tennessee to make life better for him. In a class assignment he wrote, "I want to be remembered not as the best man alive, but the most respected." Steven Presley was another among the four. He was also seventeen. Presley would make people’s lives better. The district of the school described him as "always happy, smiling, funny, kindhearted, sweet and polite," the type of person "who would do anything for anyone (and) was loved by all who knew him." Another person killed was John Lajeunesse. He was sixteen. He would have been seventeen next month. And the fourth person who killed and was sitting in the driver’s seat was Rikki Jacobsen. She was twenty two and a young mother of a young boy. Bennett and Moser tried to rob Davis and Jacobsen. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said “Bennett faces four counts of felony murder, four counts of premeditated murder and two counts of attempted aggravated robbery” during a press release on Friday. 57,000 residents were shocked. The residents live in a neighborhood where everyone knows each other. Twenty hours within the crime, Bennett was arrested after being spotted in a nearby car, which was seventy miles west of Knoxville. Moser was arrested on Friday morning in her home which is forty miles south where she took place in the crime. Those four victims were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police Have Taken it Way too Far with "Accidental" Killing

“Charlotte police kill unarmed man who may have been running to them for help”

By: Jessica King and AnneClaire Stapleton

Source: CNN
In North Carolina, a man was shot and killed by police who was running towards them Saturday morning. The man was twenty-four- year-old Jonathan Ferrell. He was shot several times and died instantly. He was unarmed. There was a call earlier to 911 about a man entering and breaking into a home in Charlotte, North Carolina and the police believed that Ferrell was the man that was breaking entering because he matched the caller’s description. Turns out he was only running towards police for help involving a car accident. Police found a car wreck nearby and they believe that was the car wreck Ferrell wanted help for. Chief Rodney Monroe told CNN that the accident was pretty serious. Authorities believe that Farrell had to climb out of the back window because of how serious the accident was. Officer Randall Kerrick, the man who shot Ferrell, turned himself in Saturday afternoon. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter. “A charge of voluntary manslaughter means the person used excessive force in self-defense, or carried out the act without intent to kill.” One would think that Kerrick shot Ferrell on purpose in self-defense. Kerrick could not have possibly hurt Ferrell without intending to kill if he thought Ferrell was charging at them. Kerrick had no right to use his gun during that time. There were three officers at the scene but only Kerrick had a gun. All three of them have been placed on paid leave. That means that the officers are put on investigation for a wrong doing and they cannot come to work but are not fired yet until proven guilty, but they still get paid at home. Ferrell’s family is devastated. Ferrell had one brother who played football with him at A&M University. Ferrell was engaged and would have turned twenty-five next month. There have been many incidents with police killing innocent people by “mistake.” Police have taken their gun ownership too far and need to calm down and not assume. Now that is a big mistake.

Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" Review

By: Bill Lamb

http://top40.about.com/od/singles/gr/Miley-Cyrus-wrecking-Ball.htm

Miley Cyrus released a brand new song called “Wrecking Ball.” Bill Lamb wrote a review about this song and pointed out the pros and the cons. He uses claims of value throughout the whole article and mentions some points for claims of fact and policy. He says that Miley’s performance in the song is strong but it sounds like “Dr. Luke tossed off the production in his spare time after devoting more attention to Katy Perry.” A pro he mentions is that she had strong vocal performance. She hits high notes throughout song and one could hear the strong vocals Lamb is talking about (claim of fact). A con he mentions is that it is an overly familiar production (claim of policy). Many artists in this day are making music that sounds strongly a like and it is no surprise Miley’s song sounds familiar to other songs that have been made. Another con Lamb mentions is lack of development in the lyrics (claim of policy). By saying this, he means that the song’s lyrics have not been put much time into it and some lyrics are repeated much like other pop songs. Lamb talks about how Miley is becoming controversial about what she is doing in her career and how “Wrecking Ball” is boring after hearing it a couple times knowing how crazy she has become (claims of value). Lamb mentions that her vocals are pleasant to hear but the song has weak elements (claims of value). The song is talking about how entering a relationship is “like a wrecking ball” and she says in the song “all you did was wreck me.” Lamb says how that is too easy that the point is not developed (claims of value). Lamb says at the end of the article that Miley’s old song “The Climb” is better and people should listen to that (claims of value).

107 year-old-man had energy to shoot police officers and assault people.

"107-year-old man killed in police shootout in Arkansas"
By Faith Karimi
In Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a 107 year-old-man was shot and killed by SWAT officers on Saturday night. It was during a confrontation in which he was shot during. His name was Monroe Isadore.  It is said that an aggravated assault had occurred against two people at the residence. The two people were led out of the house. It is not mentioned whether how the suspect was involved or what role he had in the assaults. The officers walked towards the bedroom and Isadore was hiding there. Once the officers walked through, Isadore started shooting at them. None of the officers were hit by his gunfire. They went to safer area and called for backup and the SWAT team arrived. They started making negotiations with Isadore. One of the officers slipped a camera into the room and noticed that Isadore had a gun. The negotiations did not work so officers through gas into the room through the windows. Isadore started firing his gun at the officers but they shot back and killed him. It is not said what distraction device was used. Only eight percent of USA citizens are over 104 years old and it is surprising to think that a 107 year-old-man did this. Who knew he had the energy?

One-Year-Old Shot in the Head

"16-month-old baby shot dead by killer gunning for his father.''

By: Larry Celona, Kenneth Garger & Antonio Antenucci

Source: CNN

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/baby_shot_dead_go2q1H80N6CBufwDQcyznJ

A killer shot a sixteen-month-old baby on the side of the head in Brooklyn on a September first around 7:50 pm while he was actually gunning his father down. The baby’s name was Antiq Hennis. He was shot right in front of his parents. He was in a stroller and his parents were pushing him from behind. Antiq Hennis died at the hospital an hour later at 8:50 pm. Gina Gamboa, a witness, heard three to four shots fired and said she saw a man screaming ‘My baby got shot! My baby got shot’ near the stroller. Gamboa said that she could see the baby laying in the stroller after all the smoke cleared. She saw the baby’s chest was moving but his head was titled towards the side. She also mentioned that there was blood everywhere. The police believe the bullet was actually meant for Anthony Hennis, Antiq Hennis’ father, not Antiq Hennis. In New York and Pennsylvania, Anthony Hennis has a record of more than twenty counts of arrests. These arrests include narcotics, weapons possession, car theft and assault, according to the source. Chris Dovsen, Antiq Hennis’ uncle, said that Antiq was vibrant and full of energy. He also mentioned that he was starting to learn how to walk. Police are still looking for the killer. Killing is starting to increase by number every day.  Guns are not doing the killing, people are and one will never understand how a human being could kill another human.

Red Velvet Ice Cream

Red Carpet Red Velvet Cake ice cream by Blue Bunny is amazing and definitely my favorite flavor. I am a big fan of red velvet cake and cupcakes so when I found out this was made I got so excited. Once I bought it and tasted it, it was like my taste buds were dancing in heaven. I bought it again once it ran out. Blue Bunny is known for their delicious ice cream so I knew this would not disappoint (ethos). Red Carpet Red Velvet Cake is rich, creamy, smooth, savory, bursting with flavor (asyndeton) and it is mouthwatering just thinking about it.  I really want to personally thank Duff Goldman, the creator of the ice cream, for making this brilliant flavor. He probably already knows a lot of people like his ice cream (rhetorical statement). Red Carpet Red Velvet Cake is a succulent ice cream flavor you can never get sick of. Red Carpet Red Velvet Cake has tiny red velvet cake chunks in. That is like a huge bonus to red velvet lovers who eat this ice cream. Eating ice cream is much easier than explaining it. Maurice de Vlaminck once said “Good painting is like good cooking; it can be tasted, but not explained” but I take it as “Good painting is like good ice cream; it can be tasted, but not explained.”

Video Game Shooting

"Police: 8-year-old shoots, kills elderly caregiver after video game"
By: Lauren Russell
Source: CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/25/us/louisiana-boy-kills-grandmother

A small eight-year-old boy shot and killed his elderly caregiver in the head on Thursday evening in Slaughter, Louisiana after playing a violent video game. The victim was eighty-seven year old Marie Smothers. She turned out to be the boy’s grandmother. The gun belonged to Smothers and the boy’s father also stated that the gun belonged to Smothers. No news has been released to where the gun was placed or if it was near the boy. The boy told investigators that he accidently shot her in the head while playing with it but authorities believe it was intentional. Neighbors state that the neighborhood is a safe quiet place and are curious as to why precautions have not taken place. Since the boy is only eight-years-old he will not face any charges. Under Louisiana law, a child under ten is free from criminal responsibility. The press thinks that the violent virtual world in the child’s game may have triggered him to shoot his grandmother.
It is said that the boy was playing “Grand Theft Auto IV' on his PlayStation III. This game is rated M for mature audience only. It is intended for seventeen-years-old and up and an eight-year-old was playing it. This game involves a bunch of shooting, killing, and stabbing. The players receive points for killing which encourages them to kill more people. He was playing this game right before the murder happened. Adam Lanza, the shooter of the killing at Sandy Hook Elementary, was obsessed with violent video games. Violent video games have been and still are a huge problem and are controversial. People have been and still are killing people. The number of people dying because of being killed in the USA is high and at stake. Are violent video games the cause of all the killings happening throughout the world?

A Night in Casablanca

In A Night in Casablanca, Groucho uses many aspects of SOAPST. Groucho is annoyed with the Warner Brothers because they denied him of naming his movie A Night in Casablanca because there is already a movie named Casablanca. Groucho wrote this letter in 1947 to the Warner Brothers. The intended audience would the Warner Brothers of course but the people of the world have obviously seen this speech. Groucho was simply informing the Warner Brothers about his feelings about their decision towards his movie title. He feels that the Warner Brothers cannot take possession over that name. Also like the name “brothers”. He is obviously angry about it. Groucho has a very sarcastic tone during this speech. He talks about other brothers and how the Warner Brothers are not the only brothers in the world. He also gets personal and aggressive when he says their names, Jack and Harry. He also includes humor aspects in it as well. He was aggressive in the beginning of the speech but then gets a little friendly afterwards. It has been said that Groucho wrote this speech as a publicity stunt to attract people. It also said that there is no actual proof whether or not the Warner Brothers actually did object the Marx Brothers from the title of the movie.

Advertisment

In this advertisement, five Nike shoes are displayed in different various colors. They each have a caption of the name of the shoe under them. There is a description and a huge text. It looks like an old time advertisement. The shoes are made to look worn out and old by having them look like shoes from the 1970’s. The advertisement was made in 2007 referring to the thirty years after 1977. This advertisement wants to let the viewer’s know that these shoes are not made to look like brand new hot shoes. The ethos here is the Nike symbol. It shows us that Nike made this and is credible and trustworthy to talk about shoes because they are known for their shoes or better yet, sports equipment. More people will buy Nike rather than an unknown random shoe brand. The logos is how they mention that these shoes are made to look like shoes from 1977 or thirty years ago. One can research or actually ask a person who lived and ran in the 1970’s if they or other people who ran during that time wore Nike brand shoes. One can also research about Nike’s history and old sports equipment and what they looked like. The pathos is the large text that says “EAT OUR DUST.” It is intimidating and motivating. The smaller text that describes how they made the shoe look old and “fresh out of the box” from thirty years and calling it “vintage” is also pathos. They are making it sound epic and that persuades people viewing the advertisement want to buy it so they can have this shoe. People who run and work out or play sports would want to know about this and would affect them to try this shoe out and buy them.

My Favorite Book

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas is my favorite book. It is one of the best fictions there is. It is an amazing book because it is written terrifically and it is down to last detail. It is breath taking. The way Edmond Dantes (main character) portrays a whole new character after he gets out of jail for a crime he did not commit and seeks revenge on those who put his innocent self in jail is exhilarating. He does not wish to kill them but, make them suffer. His schemes are so clever and admirable. He made sure who ever made him suffer for a handful of years got the same damage done back to them. It feels like one is taking an adventure while reading the book and you want to continue and continue and never stop. It includes high adventure and drama, revenge and love. All the characters are memorable and the language is pure genius. I was left satisfied and jaw-dropped when I flipped the last page of the book. I would recommend this novel to whoever is in need of a fantastic read. Many people need to read The Count of Monte Cristo if they have not. Anyone would enjoy this novel. One cannot dodge a piece like this.
